Premade Curves for Digital Negatives

The standard pre-made quad curves are designed for common platinum/palladium printing formulas. 

  • Standard starter curve suitable for most processes

These curves do not require any manual calculation or the need to compile QTR-curves from ink descriptor files.

The shape of the pre-made starter curves are designed for easy linearization and the flexibility for use with different processes.


controls for extra UV blocking Density

Start with the default ink levels for common platinum/palladium systems or use the simple tools for finding and setting your needed blocking density.

The total blocking density needed can be found with one additional step using a special blocking density quad curve and calibration image. The increased overlap of the Light Black and the five color inks ensure clear highlights without excessive ink loads.

The macOS application has additional controls for fine-tuning the starter curve ink levels in the highlights, midtones, and shadows prior to linearization.


Simple Built-In Linearization Tools

Linearization is done with a standard 21-step target (21, 51, 128, or 256-step targets).

The behind the scenes smoothing and linearization functions shift the final quad curves to the needed levels for perfectly smooth prints.

The stand-alone linearization system allows you to reshape and preview the final quad curves without any additional need for the standard QuadToneRIP tools.

Easily export the linearized curves with a single button and get on with the real printing.

Upgrading from version 1?

QCDN was my first real app, and this is a BIG version 2 update and a total re-write of the app based on 3 years of experience developing the K3, Pro, and Pro-DN macOS apps, and my black and white iOS camera app.

Many of the QCDN-v2 Starter Curve and Linearization features come directly from the Pro-DN app, just without all the extra tools for those using custom black and white ink sets.

Starter Curve Setup

The Starter Curve Setup now supports the P700 and P900 printers, along with more starter process curves for Albumen, Salted Paper, and Cyanotype, with more being added over the next few months.

Linearization

The linearization system has been completely rewritten to allow for greater insight and control of measurements and correction curves. New color previews and CIELab readouts show the original and corrected output with sample patches.

The linearization tools will also let you save .acv curves and .cube color LUT files for use with Photoshop adjustment layers when you can’t print with QuadToneRIP or when sending files to a service bureau.

The manual output curve controls now work just like a curve adjustment in an image editor to fine tune final tonality in the final print. Additionally, the new manual curve controls can have a standard compression built to mimic the use of an ICC profile to correct for lower density range prints, for greater screen to print accuracy. It will also allow you to make separate curves for duotone and multiple-layer processes like gum or cyanotype over palladium, or multi-layer carbon transfer prints.
